Volunteer Work Projects

Dominican Republic

Making a Difference
One Life at a Time.

Project Dates - currently suspended

On January 06, 2003, the NPH-Dominican family was born. NPH-Dominican started with seven children in a rented home in San Pedro de Macoris and since then it has grown quickly. The home accommodates children of all ages, from newborns to young adults.

Our first group of volunteers travelled to the home in the Dominican Republic in 2006. Projects FOTOCAN has undertaken either fully or in part, include a two storey primary/preschool, a maintenance building and carpentry shop, a regulation size soccer field complete with a sprinkler system and nets, a storage warehouse and a multi use centre. Some smaller projects completed by FOTOCAN volunteers have included play ground equipment, landscaping, sidewalks, clotheslines and gardens. We are currently in the process of requesting plans and budgets for a multi vocation and technical shop building. Future FOTOCAN projects will be decided upon based on the needs of the home..

Statistics speak for themselves

In September 2016, the vocational school opened in NPH Dominican Republic. Currently there are 77 children, including 37 internal and 40 from the community, studying technical careers in cabinetmaking, handicrafts, shoemaking, sewing, clay, and music. We constructed a new building to have space for these workshops, and in an effort to support our community, we recruited construction workers from the surrounding communities and purchased the materials locally. Applying the skills gained from these vocational classes, our graduates will have the opportunity to search for a job immediately after leaving NPH if they choose to follow that path and decide not to continue on to university. These careers will give them the economic stability for their future. In the upcoming year, our goal is to provide our proud graduates with their certifications as well as increase the number of courses and students. The cabinetmaking is part of the Vocational School and the sponsors’ name are painting in front, they are:
